Perfume butter is a fragrance, not a skincare cream. It is an alcohol-free perfume held in a velvety balm: you lift a little on a fingertip, warm it for a moment, and place it on your pulse points as you would any perfume. Its purpose is scent and the impression it leaves, which is why you use only a little.
Search for perfume butter in Arabic — «زبدة العطر» — and most of what appears is about body butter and body-care creams. The names are close; the ideas could not be further apart. This piece is for you if you have ever wondered what this "butter" is doing among the perfumes rather than among the creams.
Why is it called butter if it is not for skincare?
The name describes the texture, not the purpose. It is a "butter" because it is soft and velvety, set in its jar, yielding at the touch and melting with the warmth of the skin, the way butter softens in a warm hand. What it carries is the fragrance itself: an opening, a heart and a base, like any perfume composed with care.
At the House of Bavona, perfume butter is our signature medium. Each one is composed as a fragrance first, from fragrance oils in a smooth base that is never sticky, and presented in a 30ml jar. For an introduction to the medium and its story, read What Is Perfume Butter?
What is the difference between perfume butter and body butter?
The difference is one of purpose, and everything else follows from it.
- Purpose — body butter is a body-care product, and any scent in it is secondary. Perfume butter is a fragrance, and the balm exists only to carry it.
- Amount — body butter is spread generously over the whole body. With perfume butter, a trace is enough.
- Where it goes — body butter is for the arms, the legs, the body as a whole. Perfume butter is for the pulse points alone: wrists, neck and collarbone, where warmth awakens the scent.
- Scent — where body butter carries a scent, it is usually a light accompaniment. Perfume butter is composed to remain, with notes that unfold through the day.
That is why we never describe perfume butter the way body-care creams are described. It makes no promise to the skin. Its whole promise is the fragrance, and the impression that stays after you have gone.
Is perfume butter alcohol-free?
Yes. Bavona perfume butter is alcohol-free; its fragrance is held in the balm itself rather than in an alcohol base, which is why it is anointed onto the skin rather than sprayed. It is also why it stays close, opens gently, and unfolds slowly instead of arriving all at once and then lifting away.
To be clear: the House's Hair & Body Mists do contain alcohol, which is the carrier that lets a fragrance be sprayed and then lift into the air. If you prefer a fragrance without alcohol, perfume butter is the one for you.
How do you wear perfume butter?
Fragrance is not applied; it is performed. At Bavona, perfume butter follows five movements, set out in full in The Ritual:
- Pause — still the day, and let the room grow quiet.
- Touch — warm a little between your fingertips.
- Anoint — press it where the pulse beats.
- Linger — let it settle into the skin, unhurried.
- Remain — carry the impression into the evening.
A little is enough. If you find yourself spreading it the way you would a cream, you have used more than you need. On hot days, when scent rises faster and reads stronger, use a little less, and keep the jar out of direct sun.
Why did the House choose perfume butter?
Because, to us, fragrance is intimate. A spray keeps scent at a distance; butter brings it close to the skin. It is applied by touch and awakened by your own warmth, so the fragrance becomes, quite literally, yours. It creates an aura noticed by those near you, without filling the room. Presence with confidence, never announcement.
It is also a quiet companion for the whole day: a small jar you carry with you, so the ritual can be renewed whenever you wish, in a moment no one else needs to notice.
How do you choose your first perfume butter?
Choose by feeling before notes. Three ways in from the Bavona library:
- Morning Sunshine — opens with fruity florals, softens into a gentle rose musk, and rests upon a powdery warmth. For clear, bright mornings.
- Dreamy Butterfly — sweet powder and soft musk melting into creamy vanilla. Close and tender.
- Oriental Charm — pear and frankincense, a heart of hazelnut, osmanthus and rose, resting upon sandalwood, amber and vanilla. A confident, golden warmth.
If you would rather meet them all before you choose, the Discovery Sets gather the six signatures as 5g miniatures, so you can live with each on your own skin for a few days before settling on your signature.
Questions, answered
Is perfume butter a skin cream?
No. Perfume butter is a fragrance in a velvety balm, worn sparingly on the pulse points as you would wear perfume. Its purpose is scent and impression rather than skincare, which is why it differs from body butter in purpose, amount and where it is worn.
Is Bavona perfume butter alcohol-free?
Yes. Its fragrance is held in the balm itself rather than in alcohol, which is why it is anointed rather than sprayed. The House's Hair & Body Mists do contain alcohol.
Where should I apply perfume butter?
On the pulse points: the inner wrists, the neck, the collarbone and behind the ears. There, the warmth of the skin awakens the fragrance and keeps it close to you through the day.
